Transformations Await Chelsea Ahead of the 2026/27 Season

As Chelsea gears up for their first match of the 2026/27 season, significant changes are on the horizon. Last month, the club announced the appointment of Spanish coach Xabi Alonso as their new manager, following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior in April. Alonso, who previously managed Real Madrid, is set to take over in early July.

Alonso will step into a team that, less than a year ago, celebrated winning the FIFA Club World Cup. However, their fortunes have shifted; Chelsea finished a disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season and failed to secure a spot in any European competition.

As the summer transfer market heats up, Chelsea is expected to be active, with numerous player movements anticipated at Stamford Bridge. This impending activity is underscored by reports that the club has reportedly set a £120 million price tag on highly sought-after midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to Football Insider.

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who is anticipated to take over at Manchester City this summer, has expressed interest in bringing Fernandez to The Etihad. City currently finds itself without a manager following Pep Guardiola’s departure at the end of the last season, but Maresca, having previously worked alongside Guardiola, is widely expected to fill the role.

During their time together at Chelsea, Maresca and Fernandez established a strong rapport, leading to speculation about a possible reunion in Manchester. Fernandez, who made history as the most expensive player in Premier League history when he transferred to Chelsea from Benfica for over £106 million in 2023, has earned recognition as one of Europe’s elite midfielders since then.

In his tenure with Chelsea, Fernandez has not only made a significant impact on the pitch, scoring 31 goals and providing 30 assists in 169 matches across all competitions, but he has also played a vital role in achieving success, contributing to the club’s victories in both the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League.
