The Kansas City Current have made a significant announcement regarding their star forward, Temwa Chawinga. The club confirmed on Monday that Chawinga will remain with them until the completion of the 2029 season. The two-time Golden Boot and MVP award winner is rapidly becoming one of the most influential figures in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). She notably made history as the first player to claim back-to-back MVP honors in her first two seasons, showcasing an ability that can dramatically alter the outcome of matches.
Co-owners Chris and Angie Long expressed their enthusiasm for the contract extension, stating, “Temwa is truly special, and no one changes the game more than she does. She is someone people want to play with, making our team stronger. We are incredibly excited to extend her contract and keep her in Kansas City.”
Since joining the Current in 2024, Chawinga has amassed an impressive record, making 52 appearances and netting 38 goals. Her impact on the NWSL is unparalleled—she shattered the single-season goal record and became the first player to score against all opposing teams within a season. Furthermore, she earned recognition in 2025 as the sixth-best female footballer in the world by The Guardian.
Chawinga’s contributions extend beyond club success; her international career with the Malawi Women’s National Team has solidified her status as a global football talent. Making her debut at just 18, she has since earned numerous caps and scored over 25 goals for her national side.
General Manager Ryan Dell underscored the significance of Chawinga’s contract extension, calling her a “generational player.” He emphasized the club’s commitment to retaining such a transformational talent, stating, “We’re excited to have her continue to call Kansas City home for the years to come.”
With her blend of skill, determination, and remarkable achievements, Temwa Chawinga not only represents the Kansas City Current but also embodies the rising standard of excellence within women’s football. As the NWSL continues to grow in prominence, players like Chawinga will be crucial in attracting attention and acclaim to the league. The future looks bright for both Chawinga and the Current as they embark on the next chapter of their journey together.
