Chelsea Set to Conclude Premier League Season Against Sunderland
Chelsea will head to the North East to take on Sunderland in their final match of the Premier League season. The Blues have faced a tumultuous campaign, resulting in the dismissals of both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
Calum McFarlane currently occupies the caretaker position for Chelsea and will lead the team at The Stadium of Light on Sunday. This match marks his last at the helm before Xabi Alonso officially takes over as head coach in the summer.
As Chelsea prepares for this crucial fixture against the Black Cats, speculation arises about the future of one of their prominent players. Reports from Football Insider indicate that Cole Palmer may be considering a return to Manchester City, where he would reunite with former Chelsea manager Maresca.
Having joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, Palmer has made a significant impact, contributing an impressive 72 goals and assists over his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge. However, his performance this year has diminished, largely due to injury setbacks, and he controversially missed out on a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer.
Maresca, who previously guided Palmer during his tenure at Chelsea, is set to take the reins from current City manager Pep Guardiola, who will depart following Sunday’s match against Aston Villa.
Although Palmer, 24, still has over seven years remaining on his contract with Chelsea, reports suggest that a transfer back to City—though appealing to the player—is currently unlikely. During his brief time at the Etihad, he made 41 appearances, scoring six goals and providing two assists.
Palmers’s involvement in high-stakes matches prior to leaving City included goals in both the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup final, showcasing his potential despite the team’s loss on penalties in the former.
