Just days after announcing her retirement at the conclusion of this National Women’s Soccer League season, midfielder Jess Fishlock suffered a troubling injury during Seattle Reign’s 3-0 defeat to Utah Royals. The incident unfolded around the 65th minute when a shot from a teammate struck Fishlock in the leg, sending her crumpling to the ground in obvious distress.
Immediate medical attention was provided, with an air cast placed on her left leg before she was transported off the field on a stretcher. Following the match, Reign head coach Laura Harvey indicated that Fishlock was being evaluated, remarking that the situation appeared concerning but refrained from providing further details.
Team PR later confirmed that Fishlock was receiving an examination from the club’s medical staff at a nearby hospital, raising concerns among fans and teammates alike. The Welsh international has been a cornerstone of the Reign since the NWSL’s inception, being the only player to remain on a roster since the league’s opening day in 2013, never having missed a season.
Fishlock’s illustrious career is marked by impressive accolades, including winning three NWSL Shields in 2014, 2015, and 2022, along with three NWSL Championship appearances (2014, 2015, and 2023). Her consistent excellence has also earned her seven Best XI selections, a record that places her second in the league’s history.
In recognition of her significant contributions to the sport and the club, the Reign have planned a celebration of Fishlock’s illustrious career during their upcoming Queen’s Match on Friday, October 2.
The misfortunes of the day for the Reign compounded their disappointing performance on the pitch, as Utah made a swift start, scoring just 57 seconds into the match through captain Paige Cronin. Narumi Miura extended the lead six minutes later, and Cloe Lacasse capped off a dominant first half with a third goal in stoppage time. This victory marks only the second time Utah has managed to win away at Seattle, the first being back in 2019—a feat that now stands as the largest NWSL road victory in the franchise’s history.
Adding to the Royals’ challenges, they were compelled to make a goalkeeper substitution in the 82nd minute. Mia Justus, who had been receiving treatment moments earlier, briefly soldiered on but ultimately had to give way to Mandy McGlynn, further emphasizing the turbulent circumstances of the match.
