Another prominent Italian talent is set to make her mark in the National Women’s Soccer League. Barbara Bonansea has been signed on loan from Juventus by San Diego Wave FC, a deal that will see her in the NWSL through June 2027.

Camille Ashton, the General Manager and Sporting Director of San Diego Wave FC, expressed enthusiasm about the addition, stating that Bonansea’s extensive experience and championship-winning background make her an asset for the team. “Barbara brings technical quality, intelligence, and a winning mentality to our group. We are excited to welcome her to the club as we continue to push toward the playoffs and finish the year strong.”

Bonansea first garnered international attention during her exceptional performance in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She notably scored two goals against Australia, including the decisive game-winner, marking Italy’s first World Cup victory in two decades. She was also a key member of Italy’s squad during the 2023 World Cup, further solidifying her status as a top player.

The 35-year-old forward has devoted the majority of her career to clubs in Italy. She launched her professional journey in 2006 with A.C.F. Torino, netting 27 goals in 108 appearances over six years. Following that, she joined ACF Brescia, where she enjoyed remarkable success, scoring 61 goals in 117 appearances and securing two Serie A titles, along with two Coppa Italia trophies and three Supercoppa Italiana titles.

In 2017, Bonansea made a significant move to Juventus, where her scoring prowess continued to shine. Over 232 appearances, she found the back of the net 96 times and played a pivotal role in capturing six Serie A titles and four Coppa Italia victories. Most recently, she won the Serie A Women’s Cup in 2025, along with four Supercoppa Italiana trophies.

This loan marks a significant milestone in Bonansea’s career, as it will be her first experience playing outside of Italy. For her country, she has scored 30 goals in 107 appearances, establishing herself as a key contributor to Italy’s national team. Her 100th cap came in February 2024 against the Republic of Ireland, and she has participated in the UEFA Women’s European Championship squads in 2017, 2022, and 2025.
