Chelsea Secures Young Winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP
Chelsea has announced the signing of promising winger Geovany Quenda from Portuguese champions Sporting CP. The club confirmed on Wednesday that the 19-year-old has penned a long-term contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2033/34 season.
Born in Guinea-Bissau, Quenda relocated to Europe in his childhood, initially honing his skills at Benfica’s academy before making a bold move to Sporting in 2019, where he has since blossomed into a key player.
Quenda’s rise through the youth ranks in Lisbon culminated in a senior debut for Sporting in 2024. He made headlines by becoming the club’s youngest goalscorer, netting against Porto in the Supercup Candido De Oliveira last August. His inaugural season was remarkable, finishing with three goals and eight assists spread over 54 appearances across all competitions.
This past term, Quenda further showcased his talent by contributing a total of 15 goals and assists, helping Sporting secure a domestic league and cup double.
While he has yet to make his senior debut for Portugal, Quenda has an impressive international record at youth levels, having scored seven times in just 13 appearances for the Under-21 team.
The acquisition of Quenda is in line with Chelsea’s strategic focus on nurturing young talent, a philosophy embraced since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital assumed control of the club in 2022. This commitment to youth development has seen many prospects join the Blues in recent years, some of whom have subsequently been loaned out to French side Strasbourg, another club under the same ownership group.
Should Quenda remain at Stamford Bridge for the upcoming season, he will face stiff competition for a starting position, vying with established players like Pedro Neto, Estevao, and Alejandro Garnacho within Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Quenda is now the second addition to Chelsea’s roster this summer, following the arrival of Marco Palestra from Italian side Atalanta.
