Chelsea’s New Era Under Xabi Alonso Begins
Xabi Alonso is now entering his first full week as the head coach of Chelsea Football Club. The former Real Madrid midfielder was appointed following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior, whose tenure was marred by poor results in the closing stages of the last season.
Alonso’s managerial experience reached a significant milestone in 2023 when he led Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title. He took the reins at Leverkusen less than two years ago when the team was languishing in 17th place in the German league.
As the new season approaches, Alonso is expected to make key adjustments to his squad ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture against Fulham in August.
However, the club is reportedly prepared to demand a hefty price for one of their standout defenders. According to sources, Chelsea has set an asking price of around £75 million for full-back Malo Gusto.
Manchester City, now under the management of former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, has emerged as a potential suitor for the 23-year-old Frenchman, who is currently representing France at the World Cup in North America.
Gusto, who joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2023, has made over 130 appearances for the club, contributing three goals and 17 assists. His performance has made him a valuable asset, and the interest from City reflects his growing reputation.
City is reportedly considering an offer around £38 million, although it remains uncertain whether they will meet Chelsea’s substantial valuation. With Gusto tied to the club until the summer of 2030, Chelsea holds a robust negotiating position in any potential transfer discussions.
