The Portland Thorns have appointed Becky Sauerbrunn as a technical consultant for the remainder of the 2026 season. A former center back, Sauerbrunn enjoyed a successful four-year stint with the Thorns before retiring in 2024.

The Thorns expressed confidence in Sauerbrunn’s ability to enhance the team’s defensive strategy and provide invaluable mentorship as they strive for the NWSL Championship this season. In their announcement, the club highlighted that Sauerbrunn will leverage her expertise during video analyses, assisting both players and technical staff in reviewing performances.

Reflecting on her new role, Sauerbrunn noted her passion for film analysis, tactical discussions, and working closely with defensive units. She expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the team’s success from a new perspective, stating that this opportunity allows her to engage in those activities while reducing her physical workload.

Currently, the Thorns are positioned fifth in the NWSL standings with eight matches left to play. Robert Vilahamn has led the team as head coach since the start of the season, guiding them through a competitive campaign.

Throughout her illustrious career, Sauerbrunn won the NWSL Championship three times—twice with FC Kansas City in 2014 and 2015, and once with the Thorns in 2022. She also claimed the NWSL Shield with Portland in 2021 and was honored as the NWSL Defender of the Year on four occasions while playing for FC Kansas City and the Utah Royals FC.

In addition to her club success, Sauerbrunn achieved great heights with the U.S. women’s national team. She was part of the Olympic gold medal-winning squad in 2012 and played crucial roles in the World Cup victories of 2015 and 2019. Captaining the national team from 2021 to 2023, she previously served as co-captain alongside Carli Lloyd between 2016 and 2018, amassing a remarkable 219 caps in total.

Since her retirement from professional soccer, Sauerbrunn has transitioned into media. She co-hosts “Good Vibes FC” on The Women’s Game’s platform alongside Sam Mewis and Lynn Biyendolo, and she also hosts “Teaming Up with Becky Sauerbrunn.” Additionally, she has been featured in broadcasts of the US Women’s National Team matches on TNT.
