In an exhilarating Tuesday match in the National Women’s Soccer League, the Boston Legacy brought forth the drama as they earned their second victory in a manner strikingly similar to their first, just nine days prior.
Although the Legacy dominated the chance creation stats in the first half against Orlando, they found themselves trailing early on, thanks to Marta’s penalty conversion in the 14th minute. This marked Marta’s second start of the season and her inaugural goal, adding to her impressive tally of 15 penalty goals in NWSL history—the highest of any player to date.
Barbra Banda was introduced at halftime and immediately changed the dynamics of the game, putting Boston on the defensive more than they had been throughout the first half. The Pride capitalized on this momentum, generating more offensive opportunities than in the entire first 45 minutes. However, Boston’s defense held firm, and the breakthrough finally came in the 72nd minute. Amanda Gutierres provided a crucial assist with a cushioned header to Aleigh Gambone, who scored her first NWSL goal, leveling the match.
The contest remained intense as both sides exchanged chances, but it was Boston that earned the pivotal opportunity in stoppage time. Following a Video-Assisted Review of a corner kick, it was determined that the ball struck Luana’s outstretched hand, prompting referee Ekaterina Koroleva to award her a second penalty kick of the evening. Stepping up to the challenge, Boston’s Brazilian forward, Gutierres, calmly converted the spot kick past goalkeeper Anna Moorehouse during the Legacy’s Brazilian Heritage night.
After suffering defeats in their opening five games, the expansion team has now turned the tide, remaining unbeaten in their last four encounters. Impressively, both of their wins have come through late goals, showcasing their resilience and determination for gritty comebacks.
