Seattle bids farewell to an iconic era as Jess Fishlock, the last original member of the Reign, has confirmed she will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.

Fishlock’s announcement follows the retirements of her fellow originals, Megan Rapinoe in 2023 and Lauren Barnes at the end of the previous season. After an impressive 14-season career, Fishlock will bring to a close the final chapter in a storied partnership with the Reign, having been a cornerstone of the club since its inception in 2013.

In a heartfelt statement, Fishlock expressed, “It’s hard to put into words what Seattle and this club mean to me. This is where I’ve grown, battled, and created some of the best moments of my career. We’ve built something that transcends football, and I’m extremely proud to have been part of it from the very beginning. I will forever cherish the support from the fans and the city, and I am determined to give everything I have in this final season.”

Interestingly, her retirement announcement coincidentally marks 13 years since she scored her first-ever goal for the Reign, which notably came against their long-standing rivals, Portland, on April 21, 2013.

Fishlock’s legacy in the league is profound. Not only is she the only player to have been part of the Reign since its first match, but she has also maintained a presence on the roster without interruption. Over her career, she has achieved remarkable statistics: ranking second in league history for appearances with 219 (just behind Barnes), third in starts with 205, and third in total minutes played with 17,785.

Her accolades are a testament to her extraordinary talent. The 2021 NWSL MVP retires as one of the most celebrated players in the league, boasting three NWSL Shields (2014, 2015, 2022), three NWSL Championship appearances (2014, 2015, 2023), and seven Best XI selections—second-most in league history. Additionally, Fishlock holds the record as the club’s all-time leader in assists (30, fifth-most in league history) and total goal contributions (79).

Notably, Fishlock’s retirement from club football comes on the heels of her international retirement in 2025, where she stood as the most decorated player in Welsh football history. She made her decision after leading Wales to their first-ever major tournament at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, where she also netted the nation’s inaugural goal in the competition. With an impressive 166 caps and 48 goals across both the men’s and women’s teams, she finishes her international career as Wales’ all-time leader.

Her remarkable journey has not only left its mark on the record books but has also been defined by her tenacity, character, and leadership—elements that have been instrumental in transforming the club into a formidable presence in women’s soccer.

Seattle Reign FC Head Coach Laura Harvey praised Fishlock, stating, “Jess is one of the greatest players to ever play in this league. What makes her truly special is her daily presence. She sets a benchmark with her work ethic, competitiveness, and passion for the game. Her football intelligence has been invaluable to this team over the years, and her contributions have carried this club at times and always with pride. Her influence on the team, the city, and women’s soccer as a whole is immeasurable.”

The Reign are preparing to honor Fishlock’s illustrious career during their second annual Queen’s Match on Friday, October 2. Fans can look forward to witnessing her final regular-season home game on Sunday, November 1—Decision Day.
