As the World Cup group stage nears its conclusion and the knockout rounds commence, Premier League clubs in England are gearing up for a busy transfer window this summer.

All 20 teams in the top flight are expected to be active in the transfer market as they prepare for the upcoming season, which kicks off in August.

Among the clubs, Manchester United appears poised for significant activity. Manager Michael Carrick is keen to reshape his squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

In line with this objective, the Red Devils have shifted their focus towards acquiring a midfielder from the Championship.

According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United is actively pursuing a deal to bring midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United this summer.

The 21-year-old Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last summer and had a promising debut season despite the team’s relegation from the Premier League.

During his first year at the London club, Fernandes made 38 appearances, but he has become the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks. Plettenberg reports that Manchester United is eager to finalize a deal that would bring him to Old Trafford.

However, Carrick’s side will face stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur, who are also interested in the Portuguese international midfielder.

Negotiations between Manchester United and West Ham are reportedly ongoing, and it is believed that agreeing on personal terms will not pose a challenge for the Red Devils.

Fernandes’ current contract with West Ham runs until June 2030, yet indications suggest that a move is likely before the transfer window closes.
