In a dramatic start to their new chapter, the Orlando Pride secured a 3-1 victory over the Houston Dash in their first match under interim head coach Yolanda Thomas. This win comes just six days after the surprising dismissal of Seb Hines, placing the Pride in 11th position in the league, a mere five points away from the final playoff spot.
Following the match, Thomas praised her squad for their resilience and unity during a challenging time. She expressed her pride in their performance, particularly in light of recent difficulties.
Thomas emphasized the importance of teamwork in her post-match remarks, highlighting the players’ willingness to rise to the occasion: “The togetherness was incredible, the willingness to step up to the plate and do what needed to be done on all fronts, whether that was tactical or operational. It was truly amazing to see everyone come together in such trying circumstances, while also recognizing our responsibilities.”
The contest faced a delay of 90 minutes due to inclement weather in Orlando, but once the match commenced, the Pride quickly took control. Barbra Banda played a pivotal role, forcing an own goal in the 14th minute and later converting a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, solidifying her impact on the game.
This penalty marked Banda’s first successful conversion in a Pride jersey, as well as her 14th goal of the 2026 season, setting a new single-season club record. She surpassed the previous record of 13 goals jointly held by herself and Marta, achieved in different seasons.
Adding to the scoreline, Haley McCutcheon capped the match with a stunning goal 18 minutes into the second half. Banda assisted on the play, allowing McCutcheon to volley the ball into the top corner, further sealing Orlando’s triumphant evening.
Reflecting on her debut win as interim head coach, Thomas remarked on the challenging week leading up to the match but felt privileged to lead her team. “I pushed them to the limit emotionally and tactically, yet they delivered a remarkable performance amid the most difficult week,” she noted.
