Ismail Kartal Retains Position as Fenerbahce Head Coach Following Controversial Remarks
Despite announcing his resignation after the 1-1 draw against Roma in the UEFA Champions League, Ismail Kartal will remain the head coach of Fenerbahce. Just moments after the match, the experienced 65-year-old coach expressed intentions to step down, citing his historical ties to the club as a player and assistant coach. However, Fenerbahce President Aziz Yildirim swiftly intervened, asserting that Kartal’s resignation had not been accepted.
Yildirim took to the club’s official website to reaffirm that the coaching situation had not changed and that Kartal would continue to lead the team. This decision comes as Fenerbahce prepares for their upcoming Turkish Super Lig clash against Gaziantep FK on Monday, as they aim to improve their current ninth position in the league with six points accumulated from four matches.
Following a turbulent week, Fenerbahce’s official communication confirmed, “Our team will continue its preparations for the Gaziantep FK match with the training session set for Saturday at 11:30 under the guidance of our technical director, Ismail Kartal.” This statement underlines the club’s commitment to stability despite recent turmoil.
Kartal returned to the helm for his fourth managerial stint in June, coinciding with Fenerbahce’s resurgence into the Champions League after an 18-year absence. Yet, the pressure is palpable; ahead of the Gaziantep fixture, the team’s performance has raised eyebrows, especially considering their placement in the Super Lig and upcoming Champions League challenges, particularly a crucial group-stage encounter at Aston Villa on October 14.
Adding to the complexity of his position, Yildirim detailed a conversation with Kartal shortly after the press conference, revealing that the coach cited immense pressure and a particularly distressing incident, where he was hit by a bottle thrown from the stands, as pivotal factors influencing his initial resignation. The atmosphere at the stadium has been a point of concern, straining the relationship between supporters and management.
In response to the alarming bottle-throwing event, Fenerbahce’s social media reported that the individual responsible had been identified and subsequently banned from the stadium. Yildirim emphasized the necessity of proper fan behavior, stating, “You can’t show support by throwing punches at him like this.” His remarks indicate a desire for a united front within the club’s community, reinforcing that the well-being of coaching staff and players is paramount to achieving success.
Stamping his authority on the situation, Yildirim declared, “Ismail Kartal doesn’t need to say he’ll continue. I am his senior. I said he’ll continue, and that’s it. We’re a family.” His commitment to Kartal reflects a shared vision for stability as Fenerbahce navigates a challenging season while striving for consistent, competitive football both domestically and in Europe.
