Sam Kerr has made a highly anticipated return to the National Women’s Soccer League, signing a multi-year contract with Gotham FC that will see her through to the conclusion of the 2030 NWSL season. Kerr, the league’s all-time leading scorer, previously played for Gotham from 2015 to 2017. Although financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, it’s worth noting that Kerr is not eligible for High Impact Player (HIP) compensation. She joins a Gotham squad that recently clinched the Challenge Cup, defeating the Kansas City Current.
Expressing her excitement, Kerr stated, “I’m incredibly excited to return to Gotham FC and to this city. This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special. The ambition here is clear, and I’m looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history.” Her arrival is hailed as a pivotal moment by Gotham’s president of soccer operations, Yael Averbuch West, who noted, “Sam is one of the defining players of her generation and a game-changing talent who has consistently delivered at the highest levels of world football.”
Kerr’s NWSL journey began with the Western New York Flash, where she played from 2013 to 2014 and won the Shield in her inaugural season. She made headlines at just 19 during the NWSL Championship, where the Flash lost to the Portland Thorns. Following her stint there, she transitioned to Sky Blue FC, now known as Gotham, for three seasons. In 2018, Kerr joined the Chicago Red Stars, deepening her legacy in the league with 119 regular-season appearances and an impressive 113 starts.
In her second chapter with Gotham, Kerr aims to extend her record of 77 goals in the NWSL. Having been a two-time Most Valuable Player in the league, she earned the accolade in both 2017 and 2019. Additionally, she secured places in the NWSL Best XI during 2017, 2018, and 2019, along with winning the Golden Boot in each of those three seasons.
In 2020, Kerr took her talents overseas to Chelsea FC, where she enjoyed a remarkable tenure, starting 70 of her 93 appearances and netting 65 goals along with 22 assists. Her time in the FA Women’s Super League was marked by substantial success, including five league titles and a UEFA Women’s Champions League runner-up finish in 2021. In addition, she helped Chelsea clinch the FA Women’s League Cup three times and made significant contributions to team successes in the FA Cup.
Throughout her career, Kerr has consistently showcased her scoring ability, earning the FA Women’s Super League Golden Boot in both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. She was also recognized as part of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Squad of the Season in 2021 and is a three-time member of the WSL Team of the Year.
Kerr’s career in Australia includes stints with Perth Glory and Sydney FC, where she captured the W-League Championship in 2013. Her presence has been pivotal for the Matildas, as she stands as the all-time leading scorer for the Australian women’s national team, with 75 goals in 141 appearances. The Matildas have celebrated one AFC Women’s Asian Cup title during her tenure, alongside multiple runner-up finishes.
Her impressive accolades also include multiple nominations for the Ballon d’Or Féminin Award, finishing as the runner-up to Aitana Bonmatí in 2023 and securing third place in the voting in both 2021 and 2022.
