Just nine days before the start of the 2026 NWSL season, the Portland Thorns have named Robert Vilahamn as their new head coach. The decision comes after a prolonged search since the dismissal of Rob Gale on November 25, 2022, following a single year in charge. The delay had raised concerns whether the Thorns would commence the season without a head coach in place.
Vilahamn, hailing from Sweden, has an extensive background in women’s soccer. His managerial experience includes a stint with Tottenham Hotspur Women in the FA Women’s Super League, coupled with previous success at BK Häcken in Gothenburg, where he led both men’s and women’s teams.
In an official statement from the club, Jeff Agoos, President and General Manager of Soccer Operations, praised Vilahamn’s credentials. “Robert arrives with managerial experience at the highest levels of the women’s game, possesses a strong track record of helping players grow, and will strengthen our team environment by providing new global perspectives and insights,” Agoos remarked.
Once his visa is processed, Vilahamn is expected to arrive in Portland and is eager to make an immediate impact. He expressed enthusiasm about joining the Thorns, stating that the club’s ambition to win, its incredible fanbase, and the strong environment for developing talented players align perfectly with his vision.
Reactions to Vilahamn’s appointment have been mixed across social media platforms such as X and Reddit. Some supporters have welcomed his arrival, believing that he will invigorate a team known for its high standards. However, detractors have highlighted Tottenham’s underwhelming performances during his tenure, raising questions about his readiness for the challenging NWSL landscape, while others advocate for the capabilities of interim head coach Sarah Lowdon.
While it’s common for NWSL coaches to possess extensive experience within U.S. soccer, Vilahamn’s lack of familiarity with the league’s intricacies and American soccer culture could be a hurdle. Nevertheless, his strong track record in developing young players and providing opportunities to emerging talent may make him a valuable asset in Portland, where the blend of youth and experience thrives. The real test of his capabilities awaits, with the Thorns set to face the Washington Spirit in their season opener.
The anticipation for the upcoming season is palpable as fans look forward to seeing how Vilahamn’s leadership impacts the Thorns’ quest for success in the league. With a roster brimming with talent and a passionate support system, the coming weeks promise to be an exciting chapter in Portland’s storied football legacy.
