Mandy Freeman’s remarkable journey in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the troubled days of Sky Blue to the triumphs of Gotham FC, she has remained a steadfast presence in the league. Drafted as the 10th overall pick in 2017, Freeman now celebrates her 10th season with the same club, a rare feat that places her alongside football legends such as Megan Rapinoe and Christine Sinclair.
“It feels surreal to reflect on the past decade,” Freeman shared in an exclusive interview. “It’s hard to believe it’s been this long, filled with so many memories and emotions. Despite the ups and downs of the league and the club’s transformation, I’m genuinely grateful to have played an entire decade with one team. It’s a privilege not many players experience.”
Over her ten-year tenure, Freeman has built an impressive record. She leads the club’s history with 143 appearances and 112 starts across all competitions. Remarkably, she is only 70 minutes away from claiming the all-time minutes played record for Gotham. Additionally, she is one of just four players to have competed in playoff matches across three different years with the team.
“Mandy is the embodiment of Gotham,” remarked General Manager Yael Averbuch West. “Her unwavering loyalty and commitment during both good times and challenging periods have been invaluable. As we continue to develop Gotham, we are dedicated to ensuring Mandy receives the recognition and experiences she profoundly deserves. Having her as our captain while celebrating our successes is a tremendous honor for us.”
In recognition of Freeman’s decade-long commitment to the club, Gotham FC plans to host a special post-match ceremony during this weekend’s game. The celebration will include exclusive shirts for players and staff, highlighting her significant contribution to the club and her status as a fashion icon in the league.
