Liverpool gears up for Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain

Liverpool will return to UEFA Champions League action on Wednesday, facing reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their quarter-final matchup. This encounter comes on the heels of a shocking 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup, leaving the Champions League as the Merseyside club’s last chance for silverware this season.

Under the guidance of manager Arne Slot, Liverpool revelled in their Premier League triumph during his inaugural season. However, the current campaign has posed significant challenges, even after the club invested heavily last summer. As it stands, Liverpool is fifth in the Premier League table and is not guaranteed a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Slot’s future at Anfield has intensified. Reports suggest that Slot has expressed his willingness to step down from his managerial role this summer, provided his conditions are met. Significant interest surrounds this development, as uncertainties grow over his position amid the team’s struggles.

Despite facing mounting criticism due to inconsistent performances, especially during poor stretches in October and November, Slot has received backing from the club’s hierarchy. Since taking charge in the summer of 2024, following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, he has had his share of successes and setbacks.

While Slot initially steered Liverpool to a stunning Premier League title, this season has proven to be more arduous. The team has already suffered ten league defeats, a stark contrast to the four losses incurred throughout the entire previous campaign.

Slot’s current contract is set to run until the end of the 2026/27 season. However, the revelation of his readiness to resign suggests that significant changes could be on the horizon for Liverpool. To date, the 47-year-old has secured 63 wins in 104 matches across all competitions while at the helm of the Reds, showcasing a competitive but tumultuous managerial record.
